What is Therapeutic Recreation
Our foundationTherapeutic Recreation, TR, is the profession that uses purposeful leisure interventions to
improve a person’s overall health, well being and/or quality of life. Therapeutic Recreation is founded on improving overall health and well-being through the use of leisure and recreation. Therapeutic Recreation utilizes individual interests and abilities to create a therapeutic environment for all clients. TR works to empower individuals through striving for autonomy, confidence, and knowledge of recreation with all clients. Therapeutic Recreation Specialists work with their clients to develop specific goals and objectives related to their individualized needs. TR values the independence of the client and encourages them to reach their full potential through recreational interventions. |

How TR benefits our clientsTherapeutic Recreation serves all ages and ability levels and focuses on individuals needs
in both physical and psychological health. Therapeutic Recreation strives to enable individuals through the physical, social, cognitive, and emotional domains of health. The outcomes of TR are based on the ability of recreation and leisure to enhance the functioning of the clients that are served throughout the TR field. TR also assists individuals in identifying resources in their community, establishing goals for themselves, and encouraging improvement of every day life skills. Recreational therapists treat individuals in a wide range of settings including hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, prisons, community agencies, camp settings, schools, recreation facilities, rehabilitation facilities and more. |
